In 2012, the number of jobs in the renewable energy industry worldwide was 7.3m. Last year, there was 13.7m; a 53% increase over the past decade.

A recent report by PwC found that there are only 216,000 transferable workers to help plug the gap of the 400,000 new jobs that will be created in the UK’s clean energy sector by 2030. This means there is a significant skills shortage of clean energy talent in the UK, exacerbated by the lack of students graduating in STEM subjects. 

This is a global problem, with the US also suffering from this green skills gap. In fact, since 2022, the growth of jobs in the green sector has outpaced the growth of skills, especially in sub-sectors such as battery electric vehicles, with 28,400 (+27%) new jobs being created in 2023. According to the US Department of Energy, 94% of motor vehicles and 92.2% of energy efficiency employers experienced difficulty recruiting talent in 2022:
