4 Northern Tech Startups to Watch

Having studied at Leeds University, I have a strong affinity for the North so I thought it would be a good idea to shed some light on some exciting northern startups which caught my eye. This is very much a growing market with some fantastic opportunities:

Orka Technology Group – This Manchester-based startup focuses on helping hourly workers with sourcing, on-boarding, and getting paid for work. Since launching, they have grown to over 60,000 workers. They raised £3m Series A funding last year (bringing their total funding to £32.6m), which they will use for continuing to develop their product.

Sourceful – Another Manchester-based startup whose all-in-one platform helps clients find environmentally sustainable packaging for their products. They secured their Series A funding of £15m early last year led by Index Ventures (who have also backed Deliveroo and Just Eat)

iamproperty – This Newcastle-based startup is on a mission to modernise the property market from auction to end-to-end moving services. Instead of the tradition Private Treaty method of buying property, they focus on the Modern Method of Auction (MMoA), which ensures both a faster and higher rate of completion to Private Treaty. Their Partner Agent Network has grown to over 5000 UK estate agency branches by the end of last year.

X-Lab – This Leeds-based HealthTech develops custom, web-based healthcare applications to improve patient and clinical outcomes. Their NPEx (The National Pathology Exchange) has been in use in the UK since 2006 and allows test requests and pathology results to be sent digitally from a lab to any other lab in a matter of seconds.

It’s also good to see the annual Northern Tech Awards continuing to bring attention to startups outside of London. Which northern startups have caught your attention?
